One of the main functions of transformer oil is heat dissipation, and natural convection plays a major role in the cooling of small and medium-sized transformers. When the surrounding area of the heating element is a liquid or gas medium, the layer of medium attached to the surface of the heating element is heated due to thermal conduction, and its density decreases while the medium rises. At the place where the medium leaves, new medium is replenished, thus forming a circulation of cooling medium. The thickness of the cooling medium layer added to the convection process is not large. Under stable temperature rise, the thickness of the air troposphere is 12mm~15mm, while the thickness of the oil troposphere is about 3mm. The velocity of the medium at the cooling surface is equal to zero, due to the friction between the medium and the surface of the heating element. In the circulating zone leaving the cooling surface, the velocity of the medium gradually increases and reaches its maximum value, then gradually decreases and returns to zero at the edge of the circulating zone. Transformers are the most important equipment in substations, and an important monitoring indicator to ensure their reliable operation is normal oil temperature. If the oil temperature status cannot be monitored at any time, abnormal operation of the transformer cannot be detected in a timely manner.
